Telluride Improvements for 2012/13 Season

During the off-season, Telluride completed an operational and energy analysis on existing snowmaking equipment.

After this study, the resort received a snowmaking grant through National Ski Areas Association’s (NSAA) Sustainable Slopes Program that includes five high-efficiency snowmaking guns. These new guns will be a significant addition to the 10 high-efficiency guns purchased last season, and complement the three new Piston Bully snowcat groomers thatTelluride’s grooming department has added to its fleet to improve terrain grooming

Telluride Ski Resortalso has several planned restaurant renovations and improvements anticipated to be ready for the upcoming season. Heavy investment is being made to its recently opened on-mountain restaurant, Bon Vivant, and to time-tested favorite, Tomboy Tavern, which will see the addition of a private dining room.

Colorado Ski Areas Likely to Start Making Snow This Week

In what sounds like good news for ski resorts eager to start making snow, the National Weather Service is forecasting a strong cold front to drop out of Canada mid-week, with overnight lows dropping into the teens and 20s starting Wednesday night.

That’s plenty cold to fire up the snow guns, which have already been moved into position at Arapahoe Basin and Loveland, the two resorts that traditionally compete for opening day honors. Starting Wednesday, nighttime lows should stay well below freezing, especially at the higher elevations.

A similar weather pattern prevailed last year, with a significant snowfall dusting the higher terrain around the Continental Divide Oct. 8. Arapahoe Basin opened a few days later, on Oct. 12.

Tuesday looks to be the nicest day of the week if you like sunny and warm weather, with highs climbing into to 60s. By Wednesday, highs will only reach the mid 50s as cooler air rushes down from central Canada. At this point, there looks to be just enough moisture with the system to trigger a few showers that could change over to snow down to valley levels Wednesday night and into Thursday.

Allegiant Air Adds Flights to Telluride Ski Resort Area

Allegiant Air, which abruptly announced earlier this month it was halting service from Colorado’s Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport, announced Tuesday it is adding nonstop service from Oakland International Airport and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport to Montrose Regional Airport this winter.

The Montrose airport, about 65 miles from Telluride, is one of the primary commercial aviation gateways for the ski resort area.

Flights will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from Dec. 15 to April 3. The Telluride Montrose Regional Airport Organization is providing some revenue guarantees to Allegiant to fly into the Telluride area. Without the guarantees to mitigate risk, most commercial airlines would not fly into the region at the level necessary to sustain the region’s tourism-driven economy, the airport organization said in a statement.

“There has never been a more affordable, or more accessible way for people in Phoenix and the Bay Area to discover what makes Telluride one of the world’s premier winter vacation destinations,” Telluride Tourism Board President and CEO Michael Martelon said in a statement.

Two for One Tickets with Allegiant

Flying to and from Montrose became more affordable this winter with the arrival of the region’s newest airline, Allegiant Air, and this month local tourism organizations are sweetening the pot with a special deal.

The Telluride Montrose Regional Air Organization, Telluride Ski & Golf and the Crested Butte Mountain Resort have teamed up to offer a two for one ticket deal. Travelers can purchase two tickets for the price of one to fly with Allegiant to and from Montrose and either Phoenix, Ariz. or Oakland, Calif. The deal expires Jan. 31.

According to Michael Martelon, president of the Telluride Tourism Board, the deal is aimed at filling flights into the area.

“To my knowledge, there is no program in the industry where travelers can get two for one airline tickets and skiing opportunities at two of the country’s top resorts,” said Martelon. “It’s unheard of to have this kind of option, and we’re excited to be able to offer it.”

According to a release, this winter, Allegiant is offering fare from Phoenix starting at $46.99 one-way or $93.98 round-trip. Flights from Oakland are priced the same as the Phoenix ones, and the two for one offer is based on availability. Tickets must be purchased by Jan 31.

Meteorologist Forecasts Good Start to Ski Season

In October, skiers and riders had high hopes for winter after Aspen and other Colorado ski resorts got hit with a big snowstorm early in the month. The season quickly petered out, though, with lower-than-average snowfall and higher-than-average temperatures.

Meteorologist Jack Boston doesn’t think skiers will be heartbroken two years in a row.

“You had that early-season wallop and then nothing much after that. This year is going to be different,” said Boston, expert senior meteorologist with AccuWeather, a weather service with headquarters in State College, Pa.

Boston said conditions will be favorable for snowfall in the Colorado mountains starting in late September and continuing through at least November. Ski resorts should be able to build up a decent snowpack early in the ski season, he said.
