Timelapse: Super Moon Rising Over the Rocky Mountians

imagesAstrophotographer Cory Schmitz braved a brown bear in order to capture some wonderful images of the full Moon rise on July 22, 2013. This composite shows a series of images of the moonrise, and below is a beautiful timelapse.

A series of photos combined to show the rise of the July 22, 2013 ‘super’ full moon over the Rocky Mountains, shot near Vail, Colorado, at 10,000ft above sea level in the White River National Forest. Moon images are approximately 200 seconds apart.

Bring Your Mat to the Mountains. {Reflections from the Telluride Yoga Festival}

imagesMy sweat was real, and so was the rain. The two-and-a-half hour class—called “From Earth to Sky”—during last weekend’s Telluride Yoga Festival was so much more than just mindful movement; it opened up pathways of connection to all that is natural; all that is real.

“The Telluride Yoga Festival is really about deepening your practice in a truly sacred place,” said Aubrey Hackman, certified Jivamukti Yoga instructor and the festival’s founder and producer. “Telluride really has a special vibe to it, and it doesn’t look like anywhere else in Colorado. Instead of going somewhere that is more mainstream, it’s about getting off the beaten path and feeling Telluride’s powerful and unique energy.”

Aubrey said the Telluride Yoga Festival experience is potent, no matter if you are a beginner yogi or an advanced practitioner. “The festival allows for people to really tap into their full experience, in one of the most beautiful and powerful places in the world.”

Telluride’s Real Estate Recovery

imagesAfter a half decade of strong real estate sales, the Telluride real estate market peaked in 2006 and 2007. During this peak more homes, condos and lots were sold at higher prices than ever before. Nearly every segment of the regional real estate market established a new high mark in either 2006 or 2007. This rising tide lifted Telluride, Mountain Village, Aldasoro and the Mesas.
When the national economy began its historic recession in 2008, the Telluride real estate market followed suit. The impact of the recession took its toll in the regional market with a breathtaking fall off in the number of transactions and an unprecedented softening of property prices.
While the recession kicked into full gear, second homebuyers sat on the sidelines. Notably, the bellwether segment of single family homes in the Town of Telluride fell from 33 homes sales in 2007 to only 10 home sales in 2009. In Mountain Village, 85 condos were sold in 2006 while only 36 were sold in 2009. Buyers across the nation deemed it too risky to wade into the Telluride market. While many sellers chose to wait out the storm, some sellers found themselves in a position where they had to sell. The lack of demand from second homebuyers led to a level of illiquidity that forced these sellers to significantly reduce prices to find a buyer.  This reduction in prices marked the first true period of price softening in memory.

Telluride Film Festival: Awards Contenders in the Mountain Air

telluride-film-festival-bannerA man adrift at sea. A woman adrift in space. And a young girl all by herself in the desert.  If there’s a theme at this weekend’s Telluride Film Festival, it’s that solo travel may have its benefits but also carries more than a few risks.

Colorado’s Labor Day weekend festival – which is starting Thursday, a day earlier than normal, to commemorate its 40th edition – is known for eclectic programming announced at the very last minute, and it’s often difficult to detect trends.

But the inclusion of three films – Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity,” which stars Sandra Bullock opposite George Clooney as astronauts detached from their space shuttle by a mission disaster, “All Is Lost,” director J.C. Chandor’s account of an unaccompanied sailor (Robert Redford) stuck in a sinking boat, and “Tracks” featuring Mia Wasikowska as a young explorer on a 1,700-mile trek – suggests this year’s festival will make some moviegoers appreciate the roofs over their heads just a bit more.

In recent years, more by accident than design, Telluride has hosted the world premieres of several films that went on to take the best picture Oscar, including “Argo,” “The King’s Speech” and “Slumdog Millionaire.” “It’s incredibly fortunate that we’re just really lucky that way,” said Julie Huntsinger, who directs the festival with Gary Meyer and Tom Luddy.

What’s New at Telluride Ski Resort for 2013-14 Ski Season

ICBR_TSG_1The Watch Newspaper recently released a guide to the updates you can expect at the Telluride Ski Resort during the 2013-2014 season.

Here’s your guide to what’s in store for the 2013-2014 season:

The Telluride Ski Resort is changing its tagline for the upcoming season. The resort chose “The Most Beautiful Place You’ll Ever Ski” as the tagline that encompasses Telluride’s brand, and which will now be used on all marketing materials. The new tagline replaces the previous “Unmatched in North America” slogan.  “This year we are focusing on our natural surroundings, an aspect our guests truly appreciate and value,” said Tom Watkinson, director of the resort’s public relations and communications. The resort considered other taglines, he said, including “Discover the Gold” and “ Discover the Good Life.” “The Most Beautiful Place You’ll Ever Ski” was a marketing tagline used by Telski in the 1990s.

The Telluride Ski Resort, the Telluride Tourism Board and the Colorado Flights Alliance are working together to increase visitors traveling by plane to the Montrose and Telluride airports, long a goal of all three organizations. “A major challenge of being located in the box canyon is that it’s difficult for a lot of Americans to access the ski resort because of its remoteness and long proximity from airport hubs,” said Chuck Horning, president and CEO of the resort. The Colorado Flights Alliance, an organization with a goal of increasing aviation passenger traffic through the Telluride and Montrose airports, recently announced flight service increases for the winter. Montrose will offer direct, round-trip flights from Denver, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Dallas and Houston. Great Lakes Airlines will continue to offer flights to and from Telluride and Denver.

Winter Flight Service to Increase Slightly

indexTelluride Daily Planet recently published this article on recently introduced flights into Telluride and Montrose.

Flights in and out of Telluride and Montrose this winter will include new low-cost service to and from Los Angeles as well as additional flights to Chicago.

The Colorado Flights Alliance announced the winter flight schedule late last week. All five regular airlines are returning to the area, with flights from all over the country heading toward Telluride and Montrose and air service to several major cities.

According to a release from the CFA, Montrose will offer flights directly to and from cities such as Denver, Los Angeles, Calif., Phoenix, Ariz., Chicago, Ill., Houston, Texas and others.

Meanwhile, Great Lakes will continue to offer daily service to and from Denver in Telluride. In all, five carriers will be operating flights at the Telluride and Montrose airports. The seasonal flights start between Dec. 14 and 21 and last until late March or early April, depending on the airline.

Telluride Real Estate Sales Surge in August

image.axdThis is an interesting analysis of August’s Real Estate numbers from the Telluride Daily Planet.

After a slower than average start to the year, real estate sales picked up in a big way  in August.  Through the first seven months of the year, the number of sales was down around 13 percent from 2012 while the dollar volume of sales was down  10 percent, according to numbers compiled by Telluride Consulting. But August brought a major boost; the number of sales for the month was up 23 percent from August of 2012 while the dollar volume was up 56 percent. With the August activity, the number of sales for the year is now down only 7 percent from last year and the dollar volume is back to even.
Local realtors are optimistic that things could pick up again in September, but say it’s too early to predict. According to Judi Kiernan, who owns Telluride Consulting, the August numbers were a big boost for the year. “One month can make a huge difference because we are such a small market and the news [about August] is a big contrast to July,” Kiernan said, but added that “one month does not a trend make.  “I don’t think there’s actually a reason, I think it’s as random as last month’s poor performance,” she said.
In all, 48 sales were made in August, up from 38 last year and it was best August since 2007. The dollar volume of the sales totaled $46.9 million, up from $30.1 million in August of 2012. It came on the heels of a poorly performing July, which saw 27 sales, down from 34 in July of 2012. The dollar volume for the month was down 43 percent compared with   July of 2012, meanwhile. Kiernan said about $10 million of the August sales came from condominiums in Mountain Village and another $6.5 million came from land transfers in Telluride.

Telluride Film Festival 2013: A Wrap-Up

9109632.87The metaphor that kept coming to mind at the 40th Telluride Film Festival in Colorado Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 was provided by Alfonso Cuarón‘s film Gravity. In this magically imagined, 3-D epic, astronauts Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are menaced by the Kessler effect, in which colliding satellites cause a kind of chain reaction, a cascade of shrapnel that grows bigger and bigger, out of control.

It’s a totally satisfying thrill ride — you’ve never seen a mise-en-scène like it. Like the 2011 Telluride hit Pina, about choreographer Pina Bausch, this film uses 3-D for more than just throwing objects in the viewer’s face. The actors are choreographed in space, and the IMAX-like 3-D makes you feel inside that space. Gravity‘s astronaut adrift is more physically palpable than 2001‘s, or that of any movie I’ve seen.

The brilliant, marvelously acted mystery The Past, Asghar Farhadi’s successor to his Oscar winner, A Separation, also puts you inside a Kessler cascade — a series of bad moves by good people in a scary space, a Paris apartment menaced by divorce. A woman (Bérénice Bejo) invites her estranged husband (Ali Mosaffa) to meet her lover (Tahar Rahim of A Prophet). But the new guy can’t marry her, because his wife is in a coma, caused by semi-selfish actions by everyone, and billiard ball–like coincidences that make absolute logical and emotional sense. It’s a great story with lifelike characters and veil after veil of revelations.
